PETITION
We are a politically and economically independent association who, for non-profitable reasons, have come together to propose a radical, sustainable and ecological change for Mallorca.
Our main goal is to make a contribution to safeguard the natural beauty and prosperity of this island for future generations.
In response to the global threat of climate change and its devastating consequences, this is our proposal;
THAT MALLORCA BECOMES FREE FROM POLLUTING CARBON-EMISSIONS.
Where do we start?
We propose a 10 year plan, converting 100% of the electricity used on the island to renewable energy.
Al Gore, one of the leading advocates for climate-change, has suggested the same 10-year plan as a realistic proposal for the United States.
We can also do it!
What do we do next?
We can claim from the responsible decision-makers, like politicians and business people that:
1. The electricity used on the island comes from renewable sources instead of burning fossil fuels. For example solar energy, wind energy, geothermal installations and other sources free of carbon emissions.
The costs for the planned gas and electricity connections with the mainland could be used instead for developing alternative resources and making us self-sufficient.
2. The Son Reus incinerator and the desalination plants for making fresh water should function on the basis of renewable energy and also that they reduce their contaminating emissions.
3. Rental car companies, taxi-owners and private cars gradually exchange their vehicles for carbon-free hybrids or electric cars in order to reduce carbon emissions. Subsidies from local, central and the European government for making this transition possible will be essential. Cars running on electricity or other carbon-free sources should be encouraged and rewarded with privileges, like free parking.
4. Public transportation is improved to provide a good alternative to private cars. Trains and buses should run more frequently and cost less.
5. Ask the tourist industry to become fully aware of their responsibilities regarding climate change and that they develop a more holistic approach. For example, using solar panels, clean electricity and geo-thermal installations.
6. Ask involved institutions to give preference to local and preferably organic agriculture. By encouraging local produce we reduce carbon-emissions from transportation and become less dependent on long-travelled food. Why import oranges instead of sustaining the existing orchards that are on the verge of being abandoned out of lack of economic resources? The farmers are the guardians of protecting a healthy biodiversity and keeping Mallorca Green.
7. The “Eco-tax” could be reintroduced. Each visitor to Mallorca, entering through the Marine Ports or San Juan airport pays 10 euros. The money would go into funding projects facilitating the transition to a sustainable and Green Mallorca. This plan will need help from the central government.
8. Eco-friendly green building and design is introduced.
